Petition for a bypass for Flockton Village

This is to present a petition to the full Council for later debate, concerning the subject of a bypass/relief road for the village of Flockton.

The current road through the village (the A637) has not been fit for purpose for some years now, and forms part of the Government's Strategic Road Network (SRN), with the A637 being on the Major Road Network (MRN), and therefore a bypass is seen as the only long-term solution, taking future increased traffic into account, including that from several new developments within the village itself.

Traffic data gathered last year showed the excessive volumes of vehicles, including HGVs and coaches, travelling both ways despite restrictions, and speeds far in excess of the then 30mph zone. A recently introduced 20mph zone currently seems to have had little effect, and other issues have resulted, both in Flockton and neighbouring villages such as Emley. Villages in this area under the jurisdiction of the Wakefield MDC also suffer badly due to the gyratory system for vehicles over 7.5 tonnes.

The only true solution to the problem that exists due to the limitations of the current road (admitted to as a problem by many in Highways etc.) is a new road, A bypass for Flockton.
