Musica Kirklees (formerly Kirklees Music School)

Description

Musica Kirklees is a registered charity and employs approximately 75 members of staff (teaching, administrative and management) in order to ensure that musical experiences are available in schools and centres across Kirklees.  A broad range of instruments are taught from steel pans and djembe, through orchestral to electric in a range of styles and our teachers are experts in their field.  We teach some individual students, small groups whole classes and whole school and work with adults in central locations.  Our five music centres have a variety of groups, bands and ensembles catering for beginners to advanced players and are spread across Kirklees (Batley, Mirfield, Holme Valley, Colne Valley and Shelley).  The central groups cater for those students who are working at advanced levels some of whom will take their musical studies on to universities and conservatoires.

Purpose

We endeavour to provide a life-long love of music and to instil in all those we meet that music is an art form that is accessible to everyone – whether it be as listener or performer.  We also work to ensure that musical opportunities are available across Kirklees and support the role of musical education within schools.  We provide CPD for schools and run network meetings for both primary and secondary sectors.  Audit meetings with schools across Kirklees not only provide vital consultation and support for schools, but also allows us to feedback engagement data to Arts Council England.

Musica Kirklees also acts as the lead organisation for the Music Education Hub in Kirklees and as such we encourage all music making across our area.

Role/ Expectations of Representatives

The representatives sit on the Board of Trustees of Musica Kirklees and have an important role in ensuring that we fulfil our charitable status.  They hold the management team to account and ensure that opportunities are accessible to as many people as possible.

Meetings/ Time Commitments

4 main meetings per year with sub groups meeting for staffing and finance issues as necessary.
